QMLP was selected to complete a complex site remediation program that included interior and exterior soil excavation and disposal.
The scope of work included the following:
- Excavation and disposing of hydrocarbon impacted soils within a restricted alleyway. The excavation required day lighting/support of existing utilities within the excavation boundary. The required depth (6.5 mbg) was well below the grade beam of the existing structure (pile supported);
- As part of the scope on the inside excavation QMLP was required to provide shoring. This was achieved on the one face (exterior) by backfilling the exterior excavation (up to top of grade beam) with a low strength concrete. This effectively created an in-situ permanent shoring face that could be excavated up against when working from inside the building;
- The interior excavation required, saw cutting and concrete removal, hand excavation and hydro-excavation of impacted soils and support of sanitary lines running within the excavation area. A geotechnical engineer was engaged to monitor slope stability to work with QMLP in developing a support system to allow removal of soils below elevator shafts;
- A support mechanism consisting of modified jack posts and wood blocking (designed by QMLP) allowed for complete soils removal below the non-structural elevator base slab. Elevators were isolated until backfilling (using a low strength concrete) was complete.
